Matthew McConaughey is about to become an even bigger part of Austin’s movie scene.
Alamo Drafthouse has announced that its Mueller location will officially be renamed the Matthew McConaughey Cinema during a special dedication ceremony on Monday, August 10th.
The honor recognizes McConaughey’s decades-long career in Hollywood, his deep Texas roots, and his longtime support of Austin’s film community.
McConaughey said the recognition means a lot because going to the movies has always been about more than what’s on the screen.
“It’s about who you watch them with, how long the popcorn lasts, and what you take home with you after the lights come up.”
Alamo Drafthouse says McConaughey joins a select group of filmmakers and actors who have been honored with their own branded cinemas, including Christopher Nolan, Spike Lee, Pam Grier, Bong Joon Ho, John Hughes, and Ivan Reitman.
The Mueller theater will continue operating as an Alamo Drafthouse, but the honorary Matthew McConaughey Cinema designation will celebrate one of Texas’ most recognizable stars.
Alright, alright, alright… that’s a pretty fitting honor for one of the Lone Star State’s biggest movie icons.
