
John Prine, the legendary Americana folk and country singer/songwiter has died at the age of 73 after contracting COVID-19. Prine’s family confirmed his passing to Rolling Stone, saying he died Monday, April 6 after a short short battle with the virus.
His family announced about a week ago that he had the virus and was continuing to receive care. Sunday, March 29 in a statement, the family shared he had been intubated on Saturday evening “but his situation is critical.” Prine’s wife, Fiona, gave an update April 2, stating that he was still “very ill,” yet she remained “hopeful.”
She disclosed on March 17 that she had been diagnosed with the coronavirus. The couple stated that they were quarantined and keeping their distance from their family and each other. They were both tested after she experienced symptoms following a trip to Europe. She tested positive, his was inconclusive.
Prine was a two-time Grammy award winner and was honored by the Recording Academy as their 2020 lifetime achievement award recipient. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2019.
