Nashville International Airport is officially moving closer to honoring Dolly Parton with her name.
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority has voted unanimously, 6-0, to begin the process of renaming the airport in honor of the late country music legend.
While the vote gets the process underway, officials say a final name for the airport has not yet been decided. The airport authority is working with the appropriate parties to determine exactly how Dolly’s name and legacy will be incorporated.
The proposal gained momentum following Dolly’s death on August 25 at the age of 80. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced his support for naming Nashville’s airport in her honor just days later, calling it a fitting tribute to one of Tennessee’s most recognizable and beloved ambassadors.
Nashville’s Metro Council also unanimously approved a resolution supporting the idea.
Airport officials say the latest vote is only the beginning of what will be a multi-step process, with more details about the potential new name and how the change would be implemented expected in the coming months.
If approved, the tribute would put Dolly’s name on one of Tennessee’s busiest gateways and give visitors arriving in Music City a reminder of the woman whose music, philanthropy and larger-than-life personality helped represent Tennessee around the world.
