The Brothers Osborne are back and as good as ever.
Their third album ‘Skeletons’ definitely leans more rock than their first two, but still manages to have that traditional country sound sprinkled in. It comes down to just being a Brothers Osborne record, the way John plays the guitar paired with TJ’s nuanced baritone make for a unique sound that is recognized immediately.
The album has a handful of Texas connections. The Hayes Carll penned ‘Back on the Bottle’ is a honky-tonk jam if ever there was one. A Townes Van Zandt name drop is featured in the self-consciousness ‘I’m Not For Everyone’ even though it does seem the duo has an appeal of both the traditional and not-so-traditional country crowd.
This is definitely an album to dedicate some time and listen to from start to finish. It contains one of my favorite album features with the instrumental ‘Musket Greene’ flowing right into the upbeat western tune ‘Dead Man’s Curve’.
The album ends with a song for dad. I’m convinced ‘Old Man’s Boots’ was written for my dad.
