Golfers of all skill levels are invited to hit the links for a great cause on Monday, November 2, as the James Bowie High School Baseball program hosts the 21st Annual Gary Fowler Memorial Golf Tournament at Grey Rock Golf Club in Southwest Austin.
The annual event brings together golfers, families, friends, and supporters of Bowie Baseball for a day of golf, great food, raffle drawings, prizes, and fundraising to support the baseball program and scholarships for deserving graduating seniors.
But this tournament is about more than golf. It’s also about remembering a beloved coach who made a lasting impact on Bowie High School.
Gary Fowler was a longtime math teacher and baseball and football coach who joined Bowie High School in 1997. He helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2002 state championship game, but on the morning of that game, Fowler experienced neurological symptoms that sent him to the hospital. Doctors later discovered a malignant brain tumor.
More than two decades later, his legacy continues through this tournament, an award presented in his honor, and scholarships that help Bowie seniors take their next steps after graduation.
