Cody Johnson is turning up the volume and showing fans a different side of his musical personality with his new collaboration, “Rabbit Gets the Gun,” featuring Jay Buchanan, lead singer of the rock band Rival Sons.
And this isn’t just some random collaboration. Johnson has been a longtime fan of Rival Sons, even calling them his favorite rock band.
The two artists first gave fans a taste of the song back in April when they performed it together at the Stagecoach Festival in California.
The studio version was recorded at Nashville’s legendary RCA Studio A with Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb, who has worked with artists including Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, and Jason Isbell.
Interestingly, Buchanan says he’s passed on opportunities to collaborate with country artists in the past because some of those offers felt more like marketing gimmicks than genuine musical partnerships. But working with Johnson was different.
Buchanan describes “Rabbit Gets the Gun” as an underdog story, something both singers could relate to, and that shared connection helped bring the collaboration together.
The song was initially released exclusively through Amazon Music, but it’s now available on all major streaming platforms.
For Johnson, who has never been shy about his love of different musical styles, the collaboration is another reminder that great music doesn’t always fit neatly into one genre.
