If you missed the MTV VMAs, Kacey Musgraves delivered one of the moments everybody was talking about with a beautiful tribute to Dolly Parton.
And honestly, they didn’t overdo it.
The performance started with Dolly herself on the screen, using archival footage before she began singing “I Will Always Love You.”
Then Kacey joined in, harmonizing with Dolly’s voice and turning it into what felt like one last duet between the two.
Eventually Dolly faded from the screen, leaving Kacey alone at the microphone with just a piano to finish the song.
Kacey also looked every bit the part in a sparkling hot pink gown, feathers and some seriously Dolly sized hair, but there were no dancers, no giant production and no attempt to turn it into some huge VMA spectacle.
It was simple, and that’s probably why it worked so well.
Dolly appeared on the screen one more time at the end for a final goodbye, and if you weren’t already emotional, that pretty much did it.
Kacey has been paying tribute to Dolly throughout her tour since we lost her in August, but this one was something special.
