Matthew McConaughey gave Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” a little bluegrass treatment Wednesday night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The Texas native joined Jimmy Fallon and indie folk band The Last Bison for a bluegrass version of Langley’s massive country hit during the show’s “Audience Suggestion Box” segment.
The setup came from a supposed audience suggestion pointing out that McConaughey plays in a bluegrass band in his new movie, The Rivals of Amziah King, and asking if there was some way to combine that with “Choosin’ Texas.”
Fallon made it happen.
The curtain opened to reveal McConaughey playing mandolin alongside The Last Bison, while Fallon grabbed a washboard and joined in.
And McConaughey isn’t just pretending to be a musician for the movie. The Last Bison helped shape the sound of The Rivals of Amziah King, and McConaughey and his castmates actually performed the film’s music live during filming instead of lip syncing to prerecorded tracks.
In the movie, McConaughey plays Amziah King, an Oklahoma beekeeper and musician who leads a bluegrass band. The film hits theaters Friday, August 14th.
