Tyler Childers had a big day last week. He got his name on a Federal Highway sign of U.S. 23 and purchased a weird statue of a disgraced lawyer.
The Paintsville, Kentucky native took to social media to spread the news and share the pictures. The highway sign marks the route as part of the Country Music Highway and his name was added alngside of Larry Cordle, Ricky Skaggs, Don Rigsby and Keith Whitley. A nice group indeed.
Now the statue is a whole other story. According to the Ironton Tribune Childers was able to purchase it by making a donation to the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund, which provides free legal services to low-income people.
The statue is of disbarred lawyer Eric Conn known in his prime as “Mr. Social Security.” Eric evidently had some wild TV commercials and won a boatload of social security cases, I mean the nickname kinda gives that away.
Anyway, at some point Eric pleaded guilty to over $500 million Social Security fraud schemes. He bribed a doctor and a judge at one point, but it didn’t work out.
He was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2016, but in June 2017 before he was to report to prison, Conn fled the U.S. and spent six months on the run before being captured at a Pizza Hut in Honduras.
Childers said he’d seen the statue since he was a wee tot. I wish I had the money to buy weird things from my childhood.
