Mercedes loves going on walks and runs and seems like she was made for outdoor activities. She loves to play fetch, run around the yard or just beat the heat by playing with the water hose. She likes to run around with her bones in the backyard and bury them for later. She also gets along well with other rambunctious medium and large dogs.
As energetic as Mercedes is, she still likes to spend time lazing around the house, and she never turns down a chance to cuddle with her human, especially if there’s belly rubs involved. But if you need some motivation to get some exercise, Mercedes will oblige, wagging her tail and barking in the evening to let you know it’s time to get out for a walk!
Mercedes does well with strangers and loves all of her foster dad’s friends who come over. She’s house-trained and gets free roam of the house when left alone and does fine as long as she has a variety of toys and rawhide bones to keep her occupied.
Mercedes already knows “sit”, “shake”, “come” and “stay” and is learning more things in APA!’s Total Obedience Program. The Total Obedience Program (TOP) is modeled after the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. As a TOP dog, Mercedes has a personalized training plan and works with a volunteer trainer several times a week to help her learn the skills to become the best dog she can be! She is learning skills like down, walking nicely on leash, sitting calmly when approached by strangers or other dogs, staying in a sit or down until told “free,” and “Place”, which means she will go to a specific place in your home on command.
Once Mercedes successfully completes all the skills on her training plan, she will be considered TOP Dog Ready! She is working hard to become a wonderful companion, and as a part of APA’s Total Obedience Program you can work with APA staff to continue to build a training relationship with her after adoption and master all the TOP dog skills together.
