Flatland Cavalry Shares Powerful ‘Other Side Of Lonesome’ Music Video

I remember a couple years ago, Kaitlin, called me in the morning, waking me up and asked if I had seen the news. She said there was a terrible shooting that happened in Las Vegas at a concert & that I needed to look into it. I immediately hung up & opened Facebook & found a video of terrified concert-goers running hysterically, crying, screaming, trying to find cover as a barrage of bullets sprayed all around them. I remember a cold, numbing chill coursed through me as my hair stood on-end in goosebumps and my eyes began to water. I immediately placed myself in the shoes of those terrified, helpless people clinging to their friends as bullets rained overhead. What if that were me? What if that were Kaitlin? What if MY friends and family were there? Questions began to flood my mind as my heart began to break. I remember a few questions stood out amongst them all. What was he thinking, the gunman? What if I could stop someone from doing something like this in the first place!? What would I say to someone so distraught, so depressed, so believed-to-be invisible and hurting that the only way to express their hurt, was through the use of senseless violence? I remember getting out of bed & grabbing my moleskine notebook and a pen and started writing… “On the Other Side Of Lonesome, there’s a place for you…” I wrote what I would’ve said to the gunman, or someone like that in that state of mind. Now, I understand that Kumbaya songs and rainbows aren’t scientific remedies for depression, but on reflecting on some of my loneliest times, I do remember that the kind words of strangers & the patient ears of my closests friends and family always nudged me away from the dark hole I’m capable of crawling into. My hope for anyone watching the video is that they will become more mindful of their neighbors & what they might be going through. We cannot underestimate the power of a listening ear, genuine kindness, and the weight & healing power of a hug.
