There are some songs you just don’t mess with.
Fortunately, the Turnpike Troubadours and Sierra Hull knew exactly what they were doing when they decided to record Robert Earl Keen’s Texas classic, “Feelin’ Good Again.”
The band released the new cover on Friday along with an official music video, and it’s one worth watching.
For Turnpike frontman Evan Felker, recording the song meant a lot.
“Robert Earl Keen has always been a kind of creative North Star for me since I can remember,” Felker said. “He is as much Tom Waits as he is Marty Robbins as he is John Steinbeck. I don’t know where I would be without his music. He is my hero and this is my favorite song.”
Originally written and recorded by Robert Earl Keen for his 1998 album Walking Distance, “Feelin’ Good Again” has become one of those songs that’s woven into the fabric of Texas music. Turnpike and Sierra Hull don’t try to change it. They simply put their own spin on it, with Hull adding beautiful mandolin and harmony vocals.
The music video tells several real life stories instead of just showing the band performing. One of the most powerful follows amputee bull rider Chris Gott as he gets ready to climb back on a bull after losing a leg in a rodeo accident.
There are also appearances from Robert Earl Keen, NFL star Christian McCaffrey, sports radio host George Dunham, angler Kristine Perry, cyclist Jacob Keen, and artist Sheila Swanson. Directed by Cameron Gott, it’s a simple but moving video that fits the song perfectly.
