If you grew up in the 1970s, ’80s, or early ’90s, today’s news might make you want to head straight to the nearest McDonald’s.
The fast-food giant has officially brought back its original Fried Apple Pie for a limited time beginning today, June 23. For many fans, it’s the return of a dessert they’ve been asking McDonald’s to revive for more than three decades.
The original Fried Apple Pie first appeared on McDonald’s menus in 1968 and quickly became a customer favorite. Unlike the baked version sold today, the original featured a crispy, deep-fried crust filled with hot apple filling that was famous for being approximately the temperature of molten lava when served.
McDonald’s removed the fried version from most U.S. restaurants in 1992 and replaced it with a baked pie as the company responded to changing attitudes about nutrition and healthier menu options. Even though the baked pie remained on the menu, plenty of customers never stopped demanding the return of the original.
The dessert actually survived in a handful of locations and international markets over the years, but this marks the first nationwide return of the classic fried pie in 34 years.
McDonald’s says the pie features its signature apple filling made with 100 percent American-grown apples wrapped in the same flaky fried crust that longtime fans remember. The company is bringing it back as part of its celebration of America’s upcoming 250th birthday.
If you’re hoping to try one, don’t wait too long. McDonald’s says the Fried Apple Pie is only returning for a limited time at participating locations while supplies last.
The bigger question is whether this is just a temporary nostalgia play or the beginning of a permanent comeback. Judging by the reaction on social media, there are plenty of people who would gladly trade the baked version for the fried one and never look back.
