- Texting while driving is illegal statewide. The laws on talking on a hand-held phone, however, vary by city.
- An effort to snuff local phoning-while-driving laws, like Austin’s, died during the August special session.
- That leaves the statewide ban on texting behind the wheel, passed this spring, and sterner local laws.
- State law also bans driver phone use in an active school zone, and by drivers under the age of 18.
