The 4/20 energy is alive and well in country music today.
Shooter Jennings has teamed up with Willie Nelson for a new laid back version of “When I’m Stoned,” a song that already has deep roots in the Red Dirt scene.
The track was originally recorded by Jason Boland & The Stragglers and written by Jason Boland and Roger Ray. Since its release in the early 2000s, it’s become a staple for Red Dirt fans and a song that’s held up over time.
Shooter also has history here, having worked with the Stragglers as a producer in the past, which makes this collaboration feel a little more full-circle.
Shooter Jennings explains, “I’ve known Jason Boland for more than half my life. I saw him playing songs in bars. I opened for him the day we got thrown in jail in Baylor County for weed. So naturally, when they asked me to do this project, I enthusiastically agreed and called Willie Nelson to help me out. Boland is a diamond and he’s one of the guys that influenced a lot of what is going on in today’s country music, so it was my pleasure to honor my old friend.”
And while the original still holds its place, this version… might leave you going back to it.
Give it a listen in the video above.
