Country fans are about to get something pretty special… new music from Don Williams.
Not remixes, not AI, not recycled material. These are previously unheard recordings from the “Gentle Giant,” and they’re finally getting a proper release.
A new project called Epilogue: The Cellar Tapes is set to drop May 29. The songs were recorded between 1979 and 1984, right in the middle of Don Williams’ prime, but never made it onto any of his albums. They were recently discovered on old tapes at his family’s home in Tennessee.
What makes this even better… his original vocals were still there.
Some of the instrumentation didn’t fully hold up over time, so his longtime producer worked to carefully rebuild the tracks, bringing in musicians who actually played with Don back in the day. The goal wasn’t to modernize anything, just to finish what was already there and keep it true to the original sound.
And these aren’t throwaway songs. From what’s been shared, they were simply left off albums because they didn’t quite fit at the time, not because they weren’t good enough.
One track is already out, his version of “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight,” giving fans a first listen at what’s coming. And just like you’d expect, that voice still sounds as smooth and steady as ever.
This release also comes after some confusion last year when AI-generated songs started popping up online under Don Williams’ name. That’s part of what makes this project feel a little more meaningful. This is the real thing… his voice, his recordings, from an era when he was at the top of his game.
If you’re a fan of Don Williams, or just classic country done right, this is one to keep on your radar. We don’t get “new” music from legends like this very often.
