George Strait just added another massive honor to his legendary career.
The King of Country was officially presented with his Kennedy Center Honors medallion during a White House ceremony on December 6th, where President Donald Trump handed out medals to this year’s class of honorees. The event recognizes artists who have made a lasting impact on American culture through the arts.
Trump called this year’s honorees “icons whose work has inspired, uplifted, and unified millions,” and George Strait’s influence on country music easily backs that statement up. With more than 60 No. 1 singles, sold-out stadium shows, and generations of fans, this honor feels especially fitting.
As George stepped up to receive the medal, he started to reach for his cowboy hat, but President Trump stopped him mid-motion with a laugh and said, “If you want to leave that on, you can. I think we can get it through.”
Still, Strait went ahead and removed the hat, prompting Trump to joke, “Oh, he’s got good hair.”
George shot back with an easy grin, “A little bit. I’ve still got a little bit.”
Trump, never missing a chance to talk hair, added, “I’m surprised. Sometimes they take it off and there’s not a lot.”
Without missing a beat, Strait smiled and replied, “There’s not a lot.”
Strait was part of a star-studded group of musicians and performers from across music, theater, and film who were recognized for their lifetime contributions that included: Gloria Gaynor, the band KISS, Sylvester Stallone and Michael Crawford.
It’s hard to imagine a more fitting honor for an artist who’s shaped country music for generations.
