Nov 8, 1980 was a big day for the Red-Headed Stranger and for anyone who’s ever rolled the windows down on Highway 290. Willie Nelson’s classic “On The Road Again” officially climbed to the top of the Billboard country singles chart, planting its flag as one of the most recognizable road-trip anthems ever written.
Willie originally wrote the song for the 1980 film Honeysuckle Rose and knocked it out in true Willie fashion… fast, simple, and straight from the heart. More than four decades later, it still feels like Texas in a bottle. Whether you grew up hearing it at family cookouts or you blast it on your way to a Friday night show, “On The Road Again” is one of those songs that never ages.
Not many tracks get to be both a film moment and a forever staple in country music history, but Willie pulled it off. And today we tip our hats to the tune that keeps chasing the highway right along with us.
