Texas’ own Flatland Cavalry is kicking off a new chapter in a big way, signing with the newly relaunched Lost Highway Records and dropping a brand-new single called “Gone.”
Led by frontman Cleto Cordero, Flatland has long been one of the brightest lights in the Texas-country scene, mixing heart-on-the-sleeve songwriting with that signature West Texas wind-blown sound. The band — Jason Albers (drums), Jonathan Saenz (bass), Reid Dillon (guitar), Wesley Hall (fiddle), and Adam Gallegos (keys, organ, mandolin, banjo) — also released a video for the new track this week.
“Since our last show of the tour is at Red Rocks,” Cordero says, “it felt right to tip our hats to where we’ve been and tee up what’s next. I could just imagine singing that line, ‘Chased them clouds in Colorado,’ and hearing the crowd cheer.”
“Gone” marks the first release from a batch of songs Flatland recorded earlier this year with producer Dwight Baker. Cordero co-wrote it with Ryan Beaver and Aaron Eshuis, and it perfectly captures life on the road with equal parts grit and grace.
With lyrics like “Well, I got drunk with buds in Dublin / I’ve been sober in October / Wandered through the darkness / Stuck around to greet the dawn,” Cordero reflects on a decade of touring and the personal toll that comes with chasing the dream.
He adds, “I feel like a piece of you gets woven into the mix, and when I listen to that song, I hear the soul of a man that’s been gone for the last ten years.”
