Some songs just don’t fade with time, they burn brighter. Michael Martin Murphey’s “Wildfire” is one of those songs. Originally released back in 1975, the haunting ballad about love, loss, and a ghostly horse has been a staple of country and folk music for fifty years now.
To celebrate the big milestone, Murphey has teamed up with Texas’ own Cody Johnson for a brand-new 50th anniversary edition of Wildfire, released today (September 19, 2025).
Murphey’s voice still carries the same storytelling magic, and pairing it with CoJo’s powerhouse vocals feels like the perfect bridge between generations. It’s got the nostalgia of the original, but Cody’s grit gives it a whole new life – the kind of version that makes longtime fans smile and new fans lean in to listen.
The new take doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. It stays true to the eerie, emotional heart of the original while giving it a little polish for today’s ears. It’s streaming everywhere now, and you can check out the video on YouTube too.
Fifty years later, Wildfire is still galloping strong and with Cody Johnson in the saddle alongside Murphey, it feels like this story has plenty more miles to go.
