Lainey Wilson lit up Phoenix last week to kick off her tour, and just when the crowd thought they were settling into a normal set, she busted out Don Williams’ “Tulsa Time.” Except … plot twist … this wasn’t your daddy’s slow-rolling Don Williams version. Nope. Lainey brought dancers. Real dancers. Matching outfits, sharp turns, hair flips, the whole nine yards.
Now, let’s be honest: Don Williams was about as flashy as a pocketknife. The man barely moved on stage and his idea of choreography was a gentle head nod. So if he could see Lainey’s dancers stomping and twirling across the stage, he’d probably tilt that cowboy hat back and squint, and say something like, “That’s a whole lotta movement for a song about sittin’ around in Oklahoma.”
But here’s the thing: Lainey owns that stage. She’s not just singing the classics, she’s re-packaging them for a crowd that wants their country music with a side of spectacle. And judging by the roar in Phoenix, folks were more than happy to two-step right along with it.
Would Don Williams have joined the dance line? Not a chance. Would he have cracked a little grin and been secretly glad his song was still packing arenas in 2025? Absolutely.
So here’s to Lainey Wilson, taking “Tulsa Time” out of the recliner and into the dancefloor. Don might be shaking his head up in honky-tonk heaven, but something tells me he’s tapping his boot under that cloud.
