Rosalynn Carter, former first lady of the United States and wife of President Jimmy Carter, died Sunday at the age of 96. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her closest family according to a statement released by The Carter Center. She entered hospice care at her home in Plains, GA. last week.
“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” former President Carter said in a statement. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”
Following her time in the White House, Carter continued to be incredibly active as an advocate for those experiencing mental illness, homelessness, and human rights.
The former first lady had been diagnosed with dementia earlier this year.
She continued to live with her husband in Plains, Georgia, and entered home hospice care last week, her family said.
