Billy Joe Shaver lived quite a life, the ‘Wacko From Waco’ wrote a handful of hits for the likes of Waylon Jennings, John Anderson, and many more, lost a couple of fingers in a sawmill accident, was best friends with the greatest stand-up of all time, the late Norm Macdonald, and even shot a man after asking him “Where Do You Want It?”
Since his passing 18 months ago in 2020 there has been an epic battle for his estate between his nephew, Terry Dwayne Rogers, and Willie Nelson’s nephew, Fred Fletcher.
McLennan County Court-at-Law Judge Vik Deivanayagam conducted a hearing on May 20th in which Terry Dwayne Rogers, of Bellmead, and Fred Fletcher, of Bastrop, who both claim to have wills in which Shaver named them sole beneficiary, are seeking to have the other’s claims thrown out.
Both claim to have handwritten wills from Shaver that were drawn up professionally by attorney Elizabeth Miller, who died in January 2021
Shaver was a wild guy so it’s not hard to imagine that he promised both Rogers and Fletcher his fortune from his songwriting “mailbox money” so who knows how long this battle could last.
Billy, well he’s gonna live forever in our minds.
