Every now and then I take a trip to Honkytonkville.
Today (June 10th) is the release anniversary of George Strait’s twenty-second studio album Honkytonkville. It’s a fantastic album, but is one of the few to not produce a number one song.
Honkytonkville tracklist
1: She Used to Say That to Me
2: Honkytonkville
3:Look Who’s Back From Town
4:Cowboys Like Us
5:Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa
6:As Far as It Goes
7: I Found Jesus on the Jailhouse Floor
8: Desperately
9: Honk If You Honky Tonk
10: Heaven Is Missing an Angel
11: Four Down and Twelve Across
12: My Infinite Love
‘Cowboys Like Us’ made it to #2 on the charts and who doesn’t love ‘Honk If You Honky Tonk’? My brother would honk excessively down back roads because of that song. And then there’s a personal top-five favorite George tune on the record with ‘Desperately’.
It’s one of the three covers on the album. “She Used to Say That to Me” was originally recorded by Jim Lauderdale on his 1997 album, Whisper. “Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa” was originally recorded by Merle Haggard on his 1986 album Out Among The Stars. “Desperately” was originally recorded by Bruce Robison on his 1998 album Wrapped.
Bruce’s version is great, but no one holds a candle to the king and those twin fiddles, golly, so, so good.
