Texas music legend Robert Earl Keen has been recognized for more than just his music.
Keen has been named the 2026 Texan of the Year by the Texas Legislative Conference, a longtime statewide gathering of business and political leaders that’s celebrating its 60th year.
The annual conference takes place in New Braunfels and focuses on major public policy issues impacting the state. Keen was honored as the 52nd recipient of the Texan of the Year award during this year’s event.
“Robert Earl Keen embodies the heart and spirit of Texas,” said Conference Chair AJ Rodriguez. “When devastating floods struck our state on the Fourth of July, he stepped forward not only as a beloved Texas musician, but as a leader who mobilized compassion, resources, and action.”
Following the July 2025 floods, Keen helped organize REK and Friends: Applause for the Cause, a massive fundraising effort that brought together more than 40 artists to support communities across Texas. The concert was streamed globally across multiple platforms, helping raise more than $3.2 million for flood relief, recovery, and rebuilding efforts.
Long considered one of the most influential voices in Texas music, Keen’s career has spanned decades as a songwriter and storyteller whose work reflects the culture and character of the state. This recognition highlights not only his impact on music, but also his commitment to showing up for Texans when it matters most.
“I am truly honored to receive this recognition from the Texas Legislative Conference,” Keen said. “Texas has given me so much throughout my life and career. Being able to give back, especially during a time when so many communities were hurting, is something I will always hold close to my heart.”
Keen now joins a long list of past honorees that includes presidents, governors, U.S. senators, entertainers, and major business leaders.
