In a move that took a lot of music fans by surprise, Sturgill Simpson has made his entirely new Johnny Blue Skies album available online well ahead of its planned release date. The record, titled Mutiny After Midnight, was originally scheduled to arrive on March 13 as a physical-only release … meaning vinyl, CD, and cassette were supposed to be the only ways to hear it at first.
Instead, the whole thing showed up on YouTube through what looks like an early upload to his official channel. That’s where fans discovered the full collection of tracks streaming right now, long before the world was meant to get access.
The unique twist? Sturgill himself acknowledged the upload on social media with a tongue-in-cheek message along the lines of, “Oops … might’ve just posted the whole f**in’ album on YouTube … for the real ones.”* — suggesting this surprise drop was at least partially intentional.
This new project leans more into a disco-rock sound, and it’s another example of him making whatever kind of music he wants, however he wants to release it.
