East Texas showed up in a big way this week.
Pittsburg, Texas officially declared February 28 as “Koe Wetzel Day,” honoring their hometown star with a full-on celebration that felt equal parts pep rally, homecoming and victory lap.
And yes. There’s now a mural.
The city unveiled a brand new downtown mural dedicated to Koe, featuring him with his guitar and nods to his Pittsburg roots, including references to his high school football days.
Koe was back home for the event, surrounded by family, friends, city leaders and a crowd of fans who have been riding with him since the early days. He was presented with a ceremonial key to the city as officials read the proclamation making February 28 officially his day.
For a kid who grew up in Pittsburg before turning into one of the biggest names in Texas country and beyond, it was a full circle moment.
The celebration also comes as Koe continues his massive touring run and steady climb on the national stage. But if this week proved anything, it’s that no matter how big the venues get, Pittsburg is still home.
East Texas doesn’t forget its own.
