Robert Earl Keen has been named the 2026 Texan of the Year, an honor awarded by the Texas Legislative Conference, a long-standing, nonpartisan organization made up of Texas lawmakers, business leaders, and community advocates.
The annual Texan of the Year recognition is presented to individuals who have made a lasting impact on the state of Texas through leadership, service, and cultural influence.
Born in Houston and raised in Texas, Keen built his reputation as one of the state’s most respected songwriters, known for vivid storytelling and an unmistakable sense of place. Songs like “The Road Goes On Forever,” “Merry Christmas From the Family,” and “Corpus Christi Bay” have become part of the Texas musical canon, passed down from one generation of listeners to the next.
Beyond his own catalog, Keen’s influence stretches across the Texas and Red Dirt scene, with countless artists citing him as a blueprint for how to write honestly, tour independently, and build a career rooted in authenticity rather than trends.
The Texas Legislative Conference will formally honor Keen at the Texan of the Year reception on March 26 during its 2026 conference in New Braunfels.
For generations of Texans, Robert Earl Keen’s songs have felt like home and now the state is returning the favor.
