Texas music has lost a true legend.
Joe Ely has passed away following complications from Lewy body dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and pneumonia. He was surrounded by his wife Sharon and daughter Marie at their home in Taos, New Mexico.
Born February 9, 1947, in Amarillo, Texas, Joe Ely was one of the most influential artists to ever come out of the Lone Star State. Rising from the legendary Lubbock music scene, he helped define what Texas music could be, fearless, genre-bending, deeply rooted, and always honest.
Over a career that spanned more than five decades, Ely recorded and performed around the world, leaving an undeniable mark on country, Americana, and roots music. His songwriting, storytelling, and unmistakable voice influenced generations of artists and helped put Texas music on a global stage, while never losing its soul.
Joe Ely wasn’t just a great artist, he was a pillar of the Texas music community.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, fellow musicians, and the countless fans whose lives were shaped by his music.
Rest easy, Joe. Thank you for the songs.
