Matthew McConaughey has told a lot of great stories over the years, but this one might be an all-timer.
The Austin native recently shared that he once completely missed his own birthday party… because he got too high before he ever made it inside. The confession came up during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where McConaughey talked about celebrating his 35th birthday, or at least attempting to.
According to Matthew, he was all set to head into his party when a friend handed him a joint. No big deal, except this one was a lot stronger than what he was used to at the time. He decided to spark up, then drove over to the party location like planned.
That’s where things took a turn.
Instead of going inside to greet friends and celebrate his big day, McConaughey stayed parked in his truck. And stayed. And stayed some more. While sitting there, he put Janet Jackson’s “That’s the Way Love Goes” on repeat and listened to it over and over again while getting completely lost in his own thoughts.
Eventually, he realized he should probably head inside…only to find that the party was already over. Everyone had gone home. The celebration came and went without the guest of honor ever showing up.
McConaughey shared the story while promoting his new book, Poems & Prayers, and said moments like that one played a role in his decision to eventually quit smoking. Looking back on it now, he laughs … but admits it was definitely a wake-up call.
Moral of the story? Even Matthew McConaughey isn’t immune to getting distracted by a good song and some deep thoughts… especially on his birthday. All right, all right, all wrong.
