So, Johnny Cash’s estate is suing Coca-Cola.
Yep, the Man in Black is back in the news, and this time it’s because his family says Coke crossed a line with his voice or at least, a voice that sounds a whole lot like his.
So here’s what actually happened. Coca-Cola released a new college-football commercial for the 2025 season. Instead of using a real Johnny Cash song or licensing an old recording, they brought in a singer who sounds extremely similar to Cash. The estate says the impersonation is so close that it gives the impression Cash himself was involved, approved the ad, or somehow lent his voice to the project, all of which they say is absolutely untrue.
This is where the new Tennessee law called the ELVIS Act comes in. It was created to protect artists from having their image, voice, or likeness copied or imitated, especially for commercial use. And it doesn’t just cover real recordings. It also covers impersonators, tribute singers, and even AI-generated vocals that are meant to sound like a specific artist. In short, if a company wants to use a voice that sounds unmistakably like a famous singer, they’re supposed to get permission first.
The Johnny Cash estate argues that Coca-Cola didn’t do that. They believe Coke intentionally used a Cash-style vocal to tap into Johnny’s iconic sound and create a certain nostalgic vibe without going through the proper channels. Because of that, they’ve filed a lawsuit asking for the ad to be pulled and for damages to be paid for using a “voice identity” that isn’t theirs to use.
Why does any of this matter? Because this could turn into a major test case for how far artists’ rights go in the age of sound-alikes and AI. If the estate wins, it may set a precedent that companies can’t use anyone who sounds too much like a legendary artist without approval. That means tribute singers, imitators, and artificially created vocals could all be handled very differently moving forward.
Bottom line: nobody used an actual Johnny Cash recording. But the estate says the voice in the ad feels close enough to count and now it’s up to the courts to decide where the line is between inspiration and imitation.
Leave it to Johnny Cash to still be shaking things up in 2025.
