On November 4, 1978, Barbara Mandrell earned her very first #1 country single on the Billboard chart with “Sleeping Single in a Double Bed.”
The song, a smooth, sassy mix of country and pop, helped make Mandrell one of the biggest crossover stars of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. It was the lead single from her album Moods, and it kicked off a run of hits that would define her career, including “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right” and “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool.”
“Sleeping Single in a Double Bed” topped the chart for three weeks and earned Mandrell an ACM Award for Song of the Year, solidifying her place as one of country music’s leading ladies.
Not bad for a tune about heartbreak, independence, and sleeping diagonally.
