One of the most powerful moments from last night’s 77th Emmy Awards came during the In Memoriam tribute and it was all about the music.
Country legend Vince Gill and rising superstar Lainey Wilson took the stage together to perform Vince’s classic, “Go Rest High on That Mountain.” The stripped-down performance was raw and heartfelt, with Lainey and Vince trading verses before joining their voices in harmony. No flashy lights, no big stage tricks … just two of country’s strongest voices delivering a song that hit everyone right in the heart.
As they sang, the screen filled with photos of the TV stars we lost this year, including Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Teri Garr, Ozzy Osbourne, George Wendt, Ruth Buzzi, Quincy Jones, and many more. The combination of those faces and that song made for a moment that stopped the room cold.
The Emmys are always about the biggest shows on TV, but last night, country music provided the soundtrack that reminded us why we care in the first place. Vince and Lainey didn’t just perform, they helped everyone watching remember, reflect, and feel a little closer to the people we’ve lost.
