Jamey Johnson just dropped a brand-new song, and it comes with a pretty cool backstory. The track, “Never Gonna Be,” was actually written about Jamey years ago by Ronnie Dunn and Terry McBride, back when Johnson was just getting his start in Nashville.
It’s got all the grit of those early days, the long nights playing for tips, a beat-up old Dodge that sometimes got towed, and that feeling of being the “new kid in town” just trying to get noticed. Johnson says he always loved the song, but it took him a while to feel like the timing was right to cut it. Enter producer Buddy Cannon, who encouraged him to finally bring it to life.
The lyrics hit hard: a loner on stage, a few outlaw buddies, chasing a dream that might never pay off. And that’s kind of the point. Johnson leans into the idea that some people might see him as a “never gonna be” and he’s good with that.
If you’re a fan of honest, no-frills country music that tells it like it is, this one’s worth a listen.
