“We challenged them yesterday,” said Texas coach David Pierce of his team’s performance at the plate against Mississippi State. “We let them know what happened just wasn’t acceptable. When you get humiliated or you get stung, you have to step up. Guys made a commitment to shorten up their swings and get after it. And that’s what we did. We still have a lot of baseball to play in our minds.”
Kennedy hit a three-run home run in the second inning that gave Texas a 3-2 lead and scored the Longhorns’ eighth and final run on Tuesday after singling, advancing to second on a groundout, stealing third and scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.
After giving up two runs in the second inning, Texas starter Tristan Stevens worked himself into a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the third inning, but was rescued by an impressive double-play that saw Williams field a grounder at third and come home to catcher Silas Ardoin for one out with Ardoin then firing to first base for out No. 2. Stevens drew a fly-out to end the third inning, getting out of deep trouble while preserving UT’s 3-2 lead.
Ardoin, who helped save at least one run as part of that critical double play in the third inning, delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to right centerfield, scoring Mitchell Daly and Douglas Hodo III and putting Texas up 6-4 in the fourth.
