With both teams vying for a spot in the NCAA Women’s Sweet 16, Texas came out strong and held off UCLA, 71-62 to advance to the next round.
Monday, UCLA defeated Wyoming 69-48 and it was Texas over Bradley 81-62 setting up the match.
Sophomore guard Celeste Taylor was in top scoring position in the Alamodome, putting up 9-17 from the field and 24 points. Kyra Lambert had 17 points and Joanne Allen-Taylor with 16.
The team stepped up and stepped up early, retaining the lead throughout all 4 quarters. Coming into the tournament, UCLA averaged 71.8 points per game, Texas averaging 70.2 points per game.
UCLA’s senior Micaela Onyenwere scored 23 points Wednesday night and teammate Charisma Osborne with 17. Monday versus Wyoming Onyenwere came put up 25 points and lead the team in scoring and rebounds for the season. She just squeaked by Texas’ junior Charli Collier, who put up 23 points against Bradley and leads Texas in both points and rebounds for the season.
Texas will move onto Round 3 facing Maryland, who advanced after beating Alabama 100-64. The game will air on 105.3 The Bat Sunday, Mar. 28 at 8PM CDT.
