Thanksgiving is almost here which means delicious food – but don’t forget, no matter how cute they are or how much they beg, there are some popular Thanksgiving foods that are extremely dangerous for our furry little family members. It’s important to remember which foods are bad for our dogs and cats – especially during those holiday meals.
1. Stuffing
You can call it stuffing, you can call it dressing … it doesn’t matter, either way if it is made with onions, scallions or garlic it can be toxic to dogs and cats and an even cause life threatening anemia. It is a kitty and doggie DON’T.
2. Cooked Bones
Bones can cause severe indigestion in dogs and cats, potentially causing vomiting and obstructing the bowel. Bones may also splinter and cause damage to the inside of the stomach and intestines.
3. Grapes and/or Raisins
There are many salads served at Thanksgiving that include grapes or raisins, but they can be DEADLY. Grapes can cause severe, irreversible and sometimes fatal kidney failure in dogs.
4. Raw Turkey
The bird is the star of Thanksgiving and SMALL amounts of cooked turkey is a perfectly fine treat for your cat or dog, but RAW meat is a no-no. Uncooked turkey can contain harmful bacteria like Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.
5. Chocolate
Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats, yet dogs love the smell and taste of it. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is. Keep all chocolate desserts out of the reach of pets or your dinner might need to end with an emergency trip to the veterinarian!
