I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Joe Nichols is one of the best and extremely underrated. I would compare him to someone else underrated, but you probably wouldn’t know who it is.
Anyway, for just under two months now, Joe has been coming out with consistent acoustic videos. Every week he’s covered a Merle Haggard song with his Merle Monday’s , he’s also covered Willie and Guy Clark. But for the first time he did one of his old songs and boy did he pick a winner to start.
My Whiskey Years was never a single, but it remains one of my all time favorites. The simple lyrics come from a man pining for the day he doesn’t miss the woman he loves. You hear the struggle in Joe’s voice and fully root for him to make it through his whiskey years.
The biggest thing any of us can do is pull ourselves out of a dark time and hope for better days.
Here’s the studio version.
