George Strait is considered the king of the country music mostly because he has more number ones than anyone. But you could never give just one reason that separates him from the rest.
One thing that he doesn’t get enough credit for is being a champion for women’s rights. And of course he does it in classic George subtle fashion.
May is both Mental Health Awareness Month and Women’s Health Month and with his birthday being just this last Monday (May 18th) it’s still George Strait week, so the perfect time to discuss the honest and positive impact his music has had on female listeners.
George isn’t a political guy in the least, he’s not out preaching a message, but his music does express what’s important to him and how he views the world.
She Let Herself Go has got to be one of the most pro-women songs out there. Adding to the brilance of the song is it tricks the first time listener into thinking it’s as pro-women as it seems.
Don’t forget How ‘Bout Them Cowgirls. A song about the strong women in this country and not a single line about their physical appearance. No, instead he touches on their pride and strength. “Boy, she don’t need you and she don’t need me. She can do just fine on her own two feet. But she wants a man who wants her to be herself” how great is that line?
George describing his perfect woman shows how much of a kind man he is.
It’s great to have someone to look up to who values women and treats them as equals. I think the narrative of men supporting women gets lost in women supporting each other. As a guy, I think it needs to just be about people supporting people. It’s a novel idea, but we can base opinions on the contents of someone’s character and nothing else.
