The Austin Film Society will be joined by famed director Richard Linklater and former UT Baseball players for a screening of “Inning By Inning: An Evening In Celebration of Augie Garrido” on Wednesday, May 9th at 7:30. The screening will take place at the AFS Cinema and will have a panel discussing Augie and his life consisting of former players Huston Street, Seth Johnson, Buck Cody, Curtis Thigpen, Justin Simmons, and Richard Linklater himself.
The most conventional way to measure a coach’s success is, of course, his record. When the late, much loved Augie Garrido retired as the coach of the Texas Longhorns baseball team in 2016, it was as the winning-est major college baseball coach in history, a record that stands today. But Augie’s story is much richer than his record of victories can begin to convey. He was an educator, a mentor, and a very wise man who loved what he did and the people with whom he shared the diamond.
As we remember Augie’s life and work, we are so fortunate that we have this film, made by his friend and admirer Richard Linklater. It takes us into Garrido’s methods as a coach, as a motivator and as a teacher, as we observe, with unprecedented access, his team meetings, practices, and conversations with players during games. No one has a better perspective on Garrido than the man himself, and his self-reflection provides some of the most interesting moments of the documentary. You don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy this film, you will find yourself fascinated by this remarkable man and his insights.
This event benefits the Neighborhood Longhorns Program and Augie’s Grand Slam Reading Program.
