On this date, June 8th, forty-three years ago Dolly Parton’s legendary song ‘I Will Always Love You’ reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for the FIRST time. The re-recording of the song on the soundtrack of the movie version of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas hit #1 in October of 1982, making Parton the first singer ever to achieve the number one position twice with the same song.
Parton wrote the song in 1973 for her one-time partner and mentor Porter Wagoner, from whom she was separating professionally after a seven-year partnership. She recorded it in RCA’s Studio B in Nashville on June 13, 1973.
