Augie Garrido, the College baseball coach who’s statistical accomplishments remain unequaled by anyone, passed away in a California hospital this morning at 1:30 am.
Coach Garrido suffered a stroke this past Sunday, the effects of which, ultimately claimed his life early today.
We’ll offer and post multiple links to many stories that will chronicle his career, his achievements and the seismic-like impact that he had here at the University of Texas.
However, as one of (probably thousands lucky enough to also call Augie a friend) – please allow me the indulgence of sharing something about those record books, that won’t be found on any of those pages….
This Ohio native, with deep roots in California – shared with me his STRONG desire to have all the memorabilia from his career – preserved in the only State that he wanted it to be in: Texas.
In fact, his specific wish, was for it to be a part of the collections at the Bob Bullock State of Texas History Museum.
When Coach told me this (and asked my help) – honestly – I was baffled and thinking – “why is he asking ME to do this?”
Well, for well over a year, what I thought was a “no-brainer” has turned out to be nothing but a series of roadblocks and bureaucrats explaining a hundred reasons why this CAN’T BE DONE.
But, the moment I heard the stunning news of his death today – it became crystal clear to me why Augie Garrido trusted me to pitch the 9th inning – heck, I’m a first-baseman at best!
Coach Garrido, with the certain knowledge that God’s help is with us, today I promise you my full dedication in making sure that Texas is the state that will house, archive and celebrate your life’s work.
Hook ‘em.
