Well, here we are…be careful what you wish for!
In 2017, I struggled to stay healthy. I started the year with the Flu and Pneumonia and it seemed to go downhill from there. Granted I’m no spring chicken anymore, but nagging injuries seemed to pile up and I finished the last few months knowing something had to change.
I went to our sales staff with the thought a.) Let’s get a few people together from the station and have a “fitness challenge” and b.) Let’s get healthy and make it fun on the air. I consider myself a semi-fit person, but the older I get the harder it is to get motivated and the harder it is to find the time to workout with my life and a career getting in the way.
Enter OnnIt Academy.
I realized quickly that this was no regular meathead gym or social gathering place where I’d be wasting an hour a day on a treadmill. From day one they were concerned about improving me as much as I wanted to improve myself. Last Friday was my fitness assessment, which shows the trainer where you are. Nobody wants to do the weigh-in and body fat analysis, but you have to have a baseline so you know where you started.
Again it’s not my first day in a gym, but I also took about 6 weeks off in the fall just to heal some nagging injuries. It’s pretty clear that I am out of shape and have a long way to go, BUT I am excited to get the ball rolling and challenge myself. I’ve learned over the years you truly need someone to push you and show you the correct way to do exercises so you don’t hurt yourself and so you won’t show up at the gym and sit in the parking lot because it was a long day.
I’ve done that way too many times.
Monday was my first day and Aharon was my trainer. It wasn’t a particularly hard workout, but I still felt like I struggled at times just to breathe. Having a patient trainer is always the key and Aharon was extremely patient and worked hard on making sure I was correct in form while making sure I was always “ok.”
Today (Wednesday, January 18th) was my second training session. Parts of today’s workout seemed easier, but sometimes it felt like it was my first day ever in a gym. I realize that getting fit isn’t a two day or two-month journey. It’s a lifestyle and that is not easy. If it was easy, we’d all do a situp and have instant abs.
I am excited about this process with OnnIt Academy. I’ll post pictures along the journey and share my successes and my failures….because failure is as important as the success when getting in shape. Most importantly, as a 46-year-old man that has serious vanity issues and truly wants to feel better, I hope that you’ll join this journey and maybe get inspired to just start moving.
Week One in the books and I’m still moving. #GetOnnit.
