Craig Way, the Voice of the Longhorns, was honored on Monday night as the Texas Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sports Media Association. He was recognized with his first award from the organization as part of the NSMA Awards Weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Way has been the Longhorns play-by-play voice for football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball since 2001, in addition to hosting Longhorn Weekly. He is also the host of High School Scoreboard Live on Fox Sports Southwest. Way has called several notable games and events for Texas, including the 2006 Rose Bowl, the 2003 Final Four and the 2002 and 2005 College World Series’ in which UT won the National Championship.
Way was honored alongside the NSMA’s 2017 Hall of Fame class, which includes Sportscasters Linda Cohn (ESPN) and the late Frank Gifford (ABC/ESPN, others), Sportswriters Mike Lupica (New York Daily News) and the late Sam Lacy (Baltimore Afro-American) as well as 2016 National Award winners Vin Scully (Sportscaster) and Tom Verducci (Sportswriter).
The National Sports Media Association & Hall of Fame seeks to develop educational opportunities for those who are interested in pursuing a career in sports media, through networking, interning, mentoring and scholarship programs. The NSMA also honors, preserves and celebrates the diverse legacy of sports media in the United States.
